Sara Russell
Sara makes objects that find their way into existing locations. They may be inserted directly into a space or created in response to it. Many of these objects can be held in your hand, similar to a coin or stone. Sometimes, she uses thread to connect-the-dots of a sculptural work, so the viewer follows the thread to discover the piece. For Sara, play is an important part of making art.
For the past several years, she has been working on a collaborative postcard project where she asked participants to make something with a small ball of clay. She took the sculptures, fired them, placed them throughout the city, and sent a postcard to the original maker with a photo and details of its location.
Originally from Oregon and California, Sara made her way to NYC in 1994 and has enjoyed making art here ever since. She currently lives in Brooklyn and has a studio in Queens.
